How To Measure Windows

For Your Blinds

If you can measure a cup of flour, you can measure your windows. Just grab a measuring tape, pen and a piece of paper! There are two ways to mount shades and blinds. Inside mounted, or Outside mounted. If you’re replacing existing blinds, measure the window itself - NOT THE OLD BLINDS - to ensure a perfect fit.

Check the depth of your window first. Depth requirements fluctuate depending on the product, so be sure to check the minimum depth specifications listed on each product page on our website. If it isn’t deep enough, you’ll need to go with an outside mount.

Steps 1

Question: Why do you measure 3 points?

A. There are reasons to measure 3 points. Since there is some distortion in any window, there is a possibility that "the inner window you ordered is too large to fit in" if you measure only one place. The safest method is to create an inner window with the minimum value.

Steps 3

Measure the depth

Inside mount measurement guide

Let’s measure the width and height. For inside mounts, measure across the top, middle and bottom inside the window frame. The smallest of the three measurements is the actual width. Round it down to the nearest one-eighth of an inch. To get the height right, measure top down on the left, in the middle and on the right inside the frame.

The largest of the three measurements is your height, rounded up to the nearest one-eighth of an inch. If you’re ordering roller, solar, or exterior shades, you only need to measure once across the top for the width. For vertical blinds, you’ll use the smallest height, not the largest. Order your blinds using the smallest width and largest height of your window. We’ll make the proper adjustments at the factory so they fit perfectly.

Outside mount measurement guide

For outside mounts, measure again across the top, middle and bottom of the window frame. This time taking the longest width, adding three to four inches for maximum light coverage. To find the tallest height, measure from the top of the frame to the bottom on the left, middle and right. Add two to three inches above the top of the window for the mount, and any additional length to the bottom, depending on how you want the blind to hang past the window sill. In most cases our factory makes no adjustments to outside mounted blinds, so they are sized to your exact measurements, plus or minus one eighth of an inch.
